The History of the Association
The Sri Lankan Psychiatric Association (UK) as formed in 2001 by a group of interested Psychiatrists of Sri Lankan origin. The initiative and the tireless efforts made by the current president Dr Bobby Somasunderam played a crucial role in the formation of this Association. The Association began as a small group and now it has become a well recognised group with a substantial membership.
Landmark Events in the origin and the development of the Association:
24 March 2001 - Preliminary Meeting held at Posthouse Hotel, Coventry at the invitation of Dr D B Somasunderam to discuss the formation of a Forum of Sri Lankan Psychiatrists.
16 September 2001- Inaugural Meeting of the Sri Lankan Psychiatric Association (UK) held at the Jarvis Hotel Conference Centre, Watford, Hertfordshire.
4 - 7 April 2002 - Active collaboration of the Sri Lankan Psychiatrists' Association (UK) at the International Conference on Mental Health & Psychiatry organised by the Sahanaya (National Council for Mental Health, Sri Lanka) in Sri Lanka.
August 2002 - Dr D B Somasunderam, President, was appointed as a Co-ordinator of the International Conference on Psychiatry in Colombo Sri Lanka, organised by the UK Chapter of the South Asian Forum on Mental Health & Psychiatry.
2 November 2002 - Inaugural Scientific Psychiatric Symposium followed by Dinner Dance, organised by the Sri Lankan Psychiatrists' Association (UK) held at Holiday Inn, Coventry.
28 June 2003 - The first Academic/Social event to be held in London.
